What do you think of my dance idea for competition?
I have this idea for my LYRICAL/BALLET dance.
The theme of the dance is to show who you are, and be yourself.
In other words, stop hiding who you are and letting your true inner beauty shine through.
My relevant costume idea was to wear a VERY layered skirt. perhaps approx 10 different colored layers that I can easily take off during the performance. I will have a balck leotard and leggings or shorts underneath it all. I already have the costume carefully planned out. i’m so excited! 
But what happens is I take off layers of my skirt one at a time through various parts of the song. Everytime I take a layer off, it’s like shedding a mask. It’s like flying over an obstacle in life. It’s like a new beginning. Then at the end of the dance, I end up wearing all black. Very plain. Which is like, you can be who you are and be confident and not worry about changing according to what others say.
And I will choose a really good and relevant song too. I was inspired by ‘so you think u can dance’
PROBLEM 1: I just want ot make sure it doesn’t seem like i’m stripping off or something? because it has nothign to do with that!
PROBLEM 2: a previous comment talked about the similarity to the a dance from so you think you can dance by jeanine and kayla.
But i’ve been wanting to do make this dance happen for such a long time! What do you think are the chances the judges will know about the one dance form ‘so you think you can dance’ from last season? the judges are all older people, like, adults, btw.
The choreography of the dance will obviously NOT be the same or have anything in common.
My dance is a solo, not a duet like on the show.
My skirt will also be different. I am using lighter, more transparent colors.
The only similarity is the way I will be ripping off the skirts like revealing an inner self.
IS THIS TOO MUCH OF A RISK TO TAKE? cause I take this competition really seriously!

Please bear in mind I’m a 2nd year dance student that has never been in competitions, but want to try to help you.
Problem 1: The easiest way I can see for you to remove the skirt layers without “stripping” would be making them so they tear away around the waist (maybe a piece of Velcro) and incorporate a turn and while doing the turn rip the skirt off.
Problem 2: The judges will probably know about the dance. We adults do watch tv (I don’t really watch SYTYCD but I have seen a dance or two). Since the choreography will be different and will be a solo versus a duet I don’t think it should be a problem. I bet that there are several similar “themes” that are used in comps (depression, loss, happiness,etc) that are all expressed in different ways and it’s how you express yourself that will be judged, not if you aren’t 100% original in your “theme” or dance. Think of how many girls dance to the same song in very different ways, same basic idea. I wish you the best of luck and this sounds very interesting.

Appropriate, as it is church dance and i wouldn’t wear anything inappropriate anyways! I am 18, it’s a young single adults party and I am going with someone and I am 18… Any ideas, esp. funny and creative!
